ADAM CRUZ SEXTET featuring MIGUEL ZENON
A creative force on the international jazz scene for the last two decades,
drummer and composer Adam Cruz is best known for his work with Danilo Perez,
Steve Wilson, David Sanchez and Edward Simon. Cruz was born in New York
City. He worked extensively with saxophonist David Sanchez and the Mingus
Big Band during the 1990's. He then toured with Chick Corea, recording
Origin - A Week at the Blue Note, and spent the end of the 90's touring in a
duo setting with guitarist Charlie Hunter. The New York Times had this to
say, "One of the most respected young musicians in New York [Cruz is]
profoundly locked in, shifting easily from straight-ahead swing to funk
patterns and Latin rhythms".

PEDRO GIRAUDO JAZZ ORCHESTRA – July 27, 7:30 pm
The amazing and acclaimed composer and bassist Pedro Giraudo, presents his
band, which boasts some of New York’s finest jazz musicians, and has
performed regularly in the most prestigious jazz clubs in the New York City
area, including the Jazz Standard, Birdland, The Jazz Gallery, Blue Note,
Joe’s Pub, as well as abroad. John Murph of Downbeat described Giraudo’s
music as “an opulent listening experience of modern, orchestral jazz,
brimming with passionate improvisations, deliberate contrapuntal melodies
and plush harmonies.” Chip Boaz of Latin Jazz Corner offered this analysis:
“The rich eloquence of Giraudo’s gorgeous artistic expression flows through
the music with an undeniable grace. “Córdoba tells a story of innocence,
discovery, and unbridled emotion, expressed delicately through the colors of
Giraudo’s finely tuned compositions.”

HARBOR CONSERVATORY FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
SUMMER MUSIC SEMESTER
Registration for the 2011 summer semester for Music is now open. Classes begin July 5th and will continue until August 18th. Private lessons are available in piano, violin, guitar, bass, clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, drums, Latin percussion and voice. Workshops and Ensembles will also be in session. Harbor Conservatory is located at One East 104th Street, corner of Fifth Avenue and is a division of Boys & Girls Harbor. Harbor Conservatory is a member of the Berklee City Music Network, established by the Berklee College of Music. Our Music Program takes pride in its commitment to serving children, teenagers and adults in a diverse range of styles from Classical and Jazz to Folkloric and Latin. Our program includes both vocal and instrumental music and instruction is available through individual and group classes. The Conservatory offers exciting, innovative and challenging classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced students from ages 3 through adults.
The two main pillars of the music program are a strong theory foundation as well as an active performance calendar with monthly “in-house” student recitals, three major outside recitals and a guest artist series which hosts a variety of well-known performing artists and master teachers to work with our students. A large number of ensembles and workshops in all styles and levels are offered to our young performers as an important part of their musical development.
The Harbor’s world-renowned Latin Music Program spans a curriculum that ranges from Contemporary Salsa and Latin Jazz to traditional Afro-Caribbean folkloric music, and a faculty of “who’s who in Latin music”. Students study a variety of musical forms such as danzon, son, cha cha cha and mambo, as they learn music illustrating different periods and artists in Latin music history.
At the Conservatory students enjoy the unique opportunity to learn while playing classic music made popular by artists such as Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco and others. The Conservatory has been a recipient of the Tito Puente Scholarship Fund, Celia Cruz Foundation, Johnny Pacheco Scholarship Fund, Carlos Santana’s Milagro Foundation and Phish Fan’s Mockingbird Foundation.

Liltingly sweet yet powerful melodic conversations caress across the trans-oceanic waters to wash up at THE MERMAID’S FEET. Singer/songwriter Catarina dos Santos’ music and soul travels between and around Angola, Portugal, Cape Verde, Brazil and New York as Raquel Z. Rivera’s voice and lyrics glide above the waves embracing Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and New York with powerful words that break through feminine myths centuries old.

Combined, the compositions of these two emerging artists are rooted in the legendary history of travel across the ocean that separates Europe, Africa and the New World. THE MERMAID’S FEET cross this ocean as part of these two artists’ individual creative process forging friendships of the soul entwined in a musical collaboration that brings light and focus on each other’s trans-oceanic musical voyage. Join us at THE MERMAID’S FEET!

Dear Friends,

Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts is proud to announce that graduate and one time faculty member DARRELL GRAND MOULTRIE and his company, ‘Dance Grand Moultrie” will be opening for Armitage Gone! Dance at Central Park SummerStage on Friday, July 15th and Saturday, July 16th. Darrell began his studies at Harbor Conservatory at age 12, he was a member of the GESTURES Dance Ensemble and has created numerous works that remain a valuable part of the ensemble’s permanent repertoire. After completing his studies at the LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, Darrell was accepted to the Juilliard School on full scholarship. Darrell is a 2007/08 recipient of a Princess Grace Foundation Choreography Fellowship Award. The Juilliard Dance Ensemble, Colorado Ballet, Ailey 2, Cincinnati Ballet, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, North Carolina Dance Theater, Milwaukee Ballet, and the dancers of the Broadway musical, The Color Purple, have performed his choreographic works. Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times writes, “Darrell…is obviously someone to watch”.

As a performer, Darrell was seen on Broadway in Aida where he performed the role of Mereb opposite Toni Braxton, Hairspray with Harvey Fierstein, and he served as dance captain for the original mounting of The Color Purple. He was last seen on Broadway in Billy Elliott which elicited a feature article in Backstage highlighting his dual careers as both performer and choreographer. Until this fall, he was Director of the Conservatory’s Musical Theater Program. We are most grateful to his elementary public school teacher, Gwen McCloud who recognized Darrell’s talents and brought him to the Conservatory, where he was nurtured and trained by the late Bertin Roswer, and current Conservatory Artistic Director Nina Klyvert-Lawson.

Dear Friends,

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE: June 18, 2011, 7:00 pm, for the GESTURES Dance Ensemble’s end of year concert, which will be presented this year as part of the Theater at Riverside Church ’s New York Family Arts Festival. This is a FREE event open to the general public in the 250 seat theater.

The annual New York Family Arts Festival (June 11 – 26) brings together hundreds of families to witness and interact with dozens of artists from a diverse range of cultures. Launched in 1999 to address an acute need for family oriented, multicultural, and affordable summer arts programming in our neighborhood, the Festival takes place during the month of June each summer. The Festival includes arts from all disciplines-dance, music, drama, and visual arts-and celebrates the traditions of the many cultures of New York City . The three main components are an outdoor opening day street fair including arts & crafts, performers, and vendors on Broadway; an afternoon tribute to family-focused organizations with performances and an awards ceremony; and day long cultural villages featuring performances, artisans, food, and workshops for an up-close and hands on hands on approach to bridging diverse cultures.

*PLEASE NOTE: ALL REQUESTS FOR TICKETS OR RESERVATIONS FOR THE GESTURES PERFORMANCE ARE HANDLED BY RIVERSIDE CHURCH THEATER. Harbor Conservatory has nothing to do with tickets, we are not producing the performance as in previous years.

Family Arts Festival 2011
